In chapter 10, we discussed advertising and strategic communication. We always live with various forms of advertising. Sometimes we don’t realize that an advertisement is an advertisement. Just as advertisers are struggling with strategies and tactics to persuade us, critical thinking is essential to our consumption of advertising. As a practice of critical thinking, let’s think about the following question.
Consider both a familiar and an unfamiliar industry or category (e.g., cars, entertainment companies, airlines, hotels, etc.). Name three brands within each category. How did you become familiar with the brand, through direct use or only through advertising? Did advertising influence your decision to first use that brand?
