STEP 1: Locate a ‘problem site’ in a school or any settings for learning. It would be easiest if it was a learning space you have access to. If you do not have access to a learning space, you are welcome to use Kangaroo Primary School as a case study site.
STEP 2: Document that site. We suggest you photograph it thoroughly if you can (no students please). Regardless, draw it up, including;
‘Step it out’ to get basic dimensions and draw up a floor plan of the room and its furnishings (top-down view) using a one-metre grid.
Mark which direction is north.
Mark what you feel are load bearing walls, and ‘filler’ walls, doorways, windows.
Draw elevations (side on views of the walls) that include windows, doorways, and other features.
Mark any ‘hard to move’ fittings (air conditioners, solid built in cupboards.
STEP 3: Analyse its current use.
How does the current arrangement of the space (its overall design, its affordances) encourage or limit student learning.
What are the strengths or weaknesses of the site as it currently exists?
STEP 4: Conceptualise the educational possibilities of this site. This is where Assignment 1 becomes very useful.
Write a short ‘educational brief’ for the use of this space (what learning aspirations the space must allow for), and a short design brief (given the educational brief, what design characteristics must be included). Note that due to the scale of this assignment, the briefs will need to be kept short – we suggest two paragraphs, about 500 words in total. The templates can be used as examples.
STEP 5: Re-design the site. This can be done freehand by you, or use some design software you may have access to, or you can cut-and-past images to create a montage of the intended modification.
Annotate your re-design, showing what design features, furniture, additional affordances are inserted, placed to assist achievement of the goals in your educational brief for the site.
In the annotations refer to anticipated student actions in the space, and anticipated teacher actions.
STEP 6: Document these activities in a written summary, we would suggest around 2000 words. NOTE: While this assignment has a word count of 4000 words, we see Steps 1-5 as equivalent to 2000 words. Thus the ‘documentation’ (Step 6) can be 2000 words, although you can go over a bit if you wish.
Step 6 MUST include a section on what methods you will use to evaluate if the space is meeting the educational goals that drove its design. (For this, it would be wise to refer to the things you listed in the Education Brief – what you want the new space to DO).
Refer to the literature review (Assignment 1) when annotating.
