Examine the Common Core State Standards for speaking and listening in grades 3-6. Then using information from reading “Historical Writing, Speaking, and Listening using Informational Texts in Elementary Curricula” identify instructional routines you can use to meet grade-level expectations in the speaking and listening strand.
Focus on routines outside of listening to or presenting a speech.
Remember a routine is not a lesson plan but an instructional strategy repeated over time to reinforce
knowledge, skills, and dispositions.
Reminder on Reading CCSS
Start with the anchor standards. These are the overarching goals by end of high school
Go to 3rd grade. Identify what a student needs to be able to know and do. The knowledge and the skills. Often the nouns and the verbs.
Go to fourth grade. What changed? Pay attention to adjectives and adverbs or additional knowledge. These are the key levers
